Today was the first session with the new daytime learners at college, they produced some stunning work, it was a real pleasure to work with them. We photographed a rag doll makeup style and three close up beauty makeovers with an emphasis on lipstick and eyes.

Well done again to the students there were some fantastic looks again this week covering geisha and fashion. It was a very creative session with lots of props and creative lighting techniques. Trampoline Photography in Nottingham and Derby

Late last year I did a shoot for Josie Clarke, an exceptionally talented makeup artist, the shoot was photographed with a qualified trampoline instructor modelling Josie's fab makeup, we set up the studio lights in a leisure centre and photographed some beautifully graceful poses with the help of the trampoline and a fabulously athletic model. I had a fantastic session over the weekend taking dance photos, I love the graceful movement of dancers, especially to capture it on camera. My current studio space has a low ceiling so I couldn't do some of the images I would have liked to but we are looking at alternative studio space this year. We went to visit friends in Newcastle last weekend, one of the reasons for the visit was to take a portrait of the two of them. We filled the car to the brim with studio lighting, reflectors, backgrounds etc and set up at their house. We had a fantastic weekend and visited some fab places. It was a real pleasure to photograph Dan and Lucy, thanks guys for a great time!

Low key portrait photography

I had a busy day on Saturday taking photos at an autumn fair and editing the photos for the calendar. On Sunday I decided it was about time that I updated the photos of our kids and got a lovely image of both of them. I wanted to go for low key lighting to create a bit of atmosphere by using shadows. I edited the image to desaturate most of the colour out then tinted the image to bring selective colours back into the image.

Another great session with the makeup students, I tried out a blue gel on the background light to give the students a different look for their portfolios. It seemed to work very effectively.

I had a fantastic day on Wednesday taking photos of a cheerleading squad for a calendar, they are a great bunch of girls and fab to work with, it was a cold November day and they had very little on when posing for a car wash photo....you can't tell on the photograph! I had a fab session today, one baby session with a lovely natured four month old and two sessions with dance students, I have attached a few images.

My current studio space has a very low ceiling so I am unable to do some of the movement shots that I would really love to photograph but I was really happy with these images, I wanted to try a different lighting technique and I was really happy with the result. I look forward to working with both girls in the new year where we can do some dance action photos without the risk of knocking themselves out on the low ceiling!

Another good evening at the college with the students, I wanted to vary their portfolio so I took some low key photos in contrast with the high key portraits taken over the last two sessions. It will be a good way to vary their portfolio, I plan to use some gels next session as well. I love to experiment with lighting and I absolutely love taking photos of people!

Gold Award for Makeup Artist's Commissioned Photograph

I won a gold award from the SWPP today for the image above, I am really, really pleased, the client loves this shot and it certainly has the wow factor for me!

Life has been very hectic on the run up to the dance show, I have been working hard on their programme and took photographs over the weekend of the students in their costumes during their dress rehearsals, it is going to look spectacular on the stage, very well done to Lorraine, Andy and Dawn for putting together such as fabulous show.

The Master Photographers Association organised a fantastic course this week on SEO training run by Susan Hallam of Hallam Communication. Thanks Susan for a fabulous course, I am now blogging and starting to optimise my website. It was a superb afternoon, Susan is very knowledgeable and delivers the training in a very user friendly, understandable way. I am looking forward to the forthcoming courses scheduled early next year.

I have been working with a number of bands and had the opportunity to photograph Simon and Oscar from Ocean Colour Scene on their recent unplugged tour, which is great because I love music and photography so combining the two is perfect! I have recently signed up to the cherubs programme with the Master Photographers Association, it is an excellent opportunity for new parents to have professional images taken over the first year of their child's life. As a parent of two young children I understand how quickly time flies and how quickly a baby grows into a toddler.

The cherubs programme costs £25.00 to register. The three session and art leather folio containing one print from each session are free.

Lighting Course

I am attending a lighting course run by Alan Thompson Photography, a couple of homework images are shown above, if you are interested in learning from a real pro get your name down on his next course. I am also attending a Sue Hallam SEO training course and a Mark Cleghorn photography and photoshop this week.

Never stop learning, always move forward, there is always something new and interesting to learn, it keeps me passionate about what I do. There is a fantastic quote by Walt Disney which says 'We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths'. It is so apt for the way I feel about photography!

MPA and SWPP Licentiate Qualification

I am very proud to announce that passed my licentiate qualification with the Master Photographers Association in May after months of hard work and preparation. I am now working towards my associate panel with the help and advice of my outstanding mentor David P MacDonald, check out his website at www.davidpmacdonald.com.

Awards

I entered a few images in the Master Photographers Association regional print competition and won three awards! I entered three images in the international SWPP awards this month and won one gold and two silver merits.

Courses

I recently attended a Fashion Lighting course run by Steve Howdle, he is an exceptionally talented fashion photographer and a really nice guy, I learnt so much and am really inspired by what we covered in the course. I am attending his advanced course shortly, I can't wait! I am attending a lighting course by Alan Thompson in August, I trained with Alan many years ago and have the ultimate respect for his work. Later in the year I am attending a Susan Hallam of Hallam Communications course to learn about internet marketing, I have wanted to attend one of Sue's courses for a long time and now I have the opportunity, she is incredibly knowledgeable in this field and comes highly recommended!

Band Photography

I have been working with a number of local Nottingham Bands and had the pleasure to photograph Simon and Oscar from Ocean Colour Scene which they have used on their website.

I picked up a gold award for the image of the couple above, I was very pleased as it was the first image I had entered in the SWPP international monthly awards. I recieved several silver awards as well.

A big thank you to Richard at Profoto for lending me some of their kit to try out, Profoto lighting is exceptional and I am now the proud owner of an outdoor kit. I had been looking into the different options and was blown away by the quality of the light of the Profoto head and reflectors.
